Lesson 5: Forklifts and pedestrians
A loaded forklift weighs as much as two cars and cannot stop quickly. Pedestrians and trucks share the floor only where the lines say so.
Pedestrian rules
- Walk only in the green pedestrian lanes. Crossing points are marked with zebra stripes and mirrors.
- Make eye contact with the driver before you cross. If you cannot see their eyes, they cannot see you.
- Never walk under raised forks or behind a reversing truck. Reversing alarms are a warning, not permission.
- Keep phones in your pocket in traffic zones.
Driver rules
- Only certified drivers with a valid Northwind licence card may operate trucks. Licences are renewed every 3 years.
- Pre-shift check on the tablet: brakes, horn, lights, forks, mast chains, tyres, battery level.
- Speed limit 8 km/h in aisles, 4 km/h in dispatch, walking pace near pedestrians.
- Sound the horn at every corner and aisle entrance. Lower forks before travelling.
Right of way
| Situation | Who yields |
|---|---|
| Pedestrian at a marked crossing | Truck stops |
| Two trucks at an aisle junction | Loaded truck has priority |
| Truck entering a trailer | Dock lead confirms wheel chocks first |
