Lesson 2: Spotting hazards on the floor
Most incidents start with something small that nobody reported: a loose pallet board, a puddle near the dock, a cable across a walkway.
The three-second scan
Before you enter any aisle, pause and scan floor, eye level and overhead. Ask three questions: Can I trip on it? Can it fall on me? Can it hit me?
Common floor hazards
- Debris and packaging. Shrink-wrap, strapping and broken pallet boards must go into the marked bins immediately, not “after this order”.
- Spills. Cone it, report it on the radio, and stay with it until the spill kit arrives. Never walk past a spill.
- Trailing cables. Chargers and scanners are docked in the charging bay only. A cable across a walkway is a reportable hazard.
- Damaged racking. A bent upright or a missing safety pin means the bay is closed until Maintenance signs it off.
Rule of thumbIf fixing it takes less than two minutes, fix it now. If it takes longer, cone it and report it.
Housekeeping standard
Each zone has a 5S board. At the end of every shift the zone lead walks the aisles with the checklist: floors clear, racking labelled, bins emptied, charging bay tidy, fire exits free. The board is photographed and uploaded to the Learning Hub.
